China Unveils Model of 6,200-ton Type 093B Nuclear Submarine with Range upto 2,500km

China's state-owned shipbuilding enterprise, CSSC China Shipbuilding Group, has unveiled a model of its latest nuclear submarine, the Type 093B. The 6,200-ton submarine boasts advanced features, including a teardrop-shaped hull, a pump-jet propulsion system, and an 18-unit vertical launch system (VLS) capable of firing long-range missiles.

The VLS is designed to accommodate a variety of missiles, including the latest submarine-launched version of the YJ-21, with a reported range of up to 2,500 kilometers. This extended range significantly enhances the submarine's strike capabilities, raising concerns among regional powers.

The Type 093B's design prioritizes stealth and underwater performance. Its integrated sonar station and optical-electronic mast further bolster its situational awareness and targeting abilities.

This unveiling marks a significant step in China's naval modernization efforts. The Type 093B's capabilities for long-range patrols and anti-ship warfare could shift the balance of power in the region and have far-reaching implications for maritime security.

Defence analysts have highlighted the Type 093B as a potential game-changer in China's naval arsenal. Its long-range missiles and advanced design align with China's ambitions to project power further from its shores.

The Pentagon's latest report on China's military power has confirmed the existence of the Type 093B, designating it as a guided-missile nuclear-powered submarine (SSGN).

While the model offers a glimpse into the Type 093B's potential, many details remain unclear. The precise configuration of its VLS and the specific types of missiles it will carry are still under debate. The timeline for the submarine's deployment and its full operational capabilities are also yet to be confirmed.
