In a significant development for the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), the Indian Navy is set to finalize a deal with US-based geospatial analytics firm HawkEye 360, as part of the much-anticipated Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA), according to sources familiar with the matter.
The decision was cleared by the Modi government following the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting on July 31, paving the way for India to join the IPMDA initiative, which was announced by QUAD nations in May 2022. This move solidifies India's commitment to enhancing maritime security and transparency in the Indo-Pacific region, in collaboration with its QUAD partners - the US, Australia, and Japan.
HawkEye 360, with its constellation of over 36 satellites, specializes in detecting and characterizing radio frequency (RF) signals, even from vessels that have deliberately switched off their transponders. This capability is crucial for combating illicit activities such as piracy, terrorism, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling, which often exploit the vastness and complexities of the maritime domain.
By partnering with HawkEye 360, the Indian Navy will gain access to critical RF data and analytics, enabling it to track and monitor maritime activities even in remote or contested regions. This information will be shared with other QUAD nations, fostering greater cooperation and coordination in tackling regional security challenges.
The IPMDA is designed to keep QUAD nations on the same page in the Indo-Pacific, ensuring transparency and preventing any country from impeding freedom of navigation in the contested South-East Asian waters. The Indian Navy's participation in this initiative will significantly bolster its maritime domain awareness and contribute to a more secure and stable Indo-Pacific region.
This collaboration also underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and the US, particularly in the defence and security domains.
