India's AGNI VI ICMB Expected soon: US Think Tanks

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is gearing up to convert the Indian Air Force's (IAF) A321 into an early warning and control (AEW&C) platform. This ambitious project, estimated to cost Rs 10,990 crore, will begin in 2025 and culminate in the delivery of the first AEW&C Mark-2 aircraft in 2027-28.

Air India's former A321 aircraft is undergoing a major overhaul to complete its service. It includes a new set of aircraft designed for military aircraft. In addition, Airbus has appointed an Indian company to oversee the installation of the main dorsal antenna, which is currently being developed and followed by computer models.

The six Mark-2 aircraft will be equipped with AEW&C radars and sensors, making them more capable than their predecessors. There is also a plan to install the radar in a new TR unit (transmit/receive), which will improve detection and tracking.

A distinctive feature of the Mark-2 aircraft is that in addition to the main rear antenna, there is also an antenna in the nose. This dual antenna configuration provides up to 300 degree radar coverage, greatly improving the aircraft's visibility and intelligence.

The technology developed for the Mark-2 aircraft will also be incorporated into the Mark-1A's warning and control area. This includes adding a nose-mounted antenna to match their 300-degree radar coverage.

The IAF plans to have a fleet of 12 Mark-1A and Mark-2 AEW&C platforms in the 2030s, in addition to three Netra Mark-1 AEW&C and three Phalcon early warning aircraft.
